Australia has many natural advantages, and one of our most critical is our abundance of gas.

Our ability to source affordable and reliable gas domestically, provides Australians with a unique advantage - energy independence.

Our gas position also puts Australia in a strong position to secure the products we need from our international trading partners.

This was brought into sharp focus during recent conflict in the Middle East. Australia’s position as a reliable international trading partner for energy, through LNG exports, helped push us to the front of the queue to secure liquid fuels and fertilisers.

In global markets, gas is a strategic asset, earning goodwill with regional neighbours, bolstering supply chains and underpinning our energy security.

Domestically, it’s the backbone to help keep household lights on and support a future made in Australia.

The Federal Government’s gas reservation policy is critically important. It presents the opportunity to cement our energy independence, deliver affordable energy for industry and consumers and support ongoing economic prosperity.

The gas reservation policy must get the balance right between the delivery of reliable and affordable gas for Australia and ensuring we support our economy through ongoing delivery of LNG exports – our second largest export.

Central to delivering both these things is ensuring the energy infrastructure is available to move gas where it’s needed. And that’s where APA comes in.

Our national portfolio includes 15,000 kilometres of gas transmission pipelines, 773 megawatts of renewables infrastructure and 884 megawatts of gas-fired generation assets, underpinned by a proud workforce operating in communities across Australia.

And we are investing to expand these assets to support energy security.

In February, we announced a ~$500 million investment to expand capacity across our east coast gas infrastructure to ensure additional gas transport capacity is available to avoid projected gas shortfalls in Victoria and New South Wales later this decade.

It also means delivering new gas power generation infrastructure to keep our energy system stable. APA is working in partnership with CS Energy in Queensland to deliver the new 400-megawatt Brigalow Peaking Power Plant.

Together with a well-designed gas reservation, these projects will help support Australia’s energy independence by making the most of the natural advantage we have sitting right under our feet.
