Securing Australia’s energy future

Established in 2000 as a demerger from AGL, APA Group inherited a vast network of gas pipelines that spanned the country and embarked on a journey of growth and diversification.

A history of growth and transformation

Established in 2000 as a demerger from AGL, APA Group inherited a vast network of gas pipelines that spanned the country and embarked on a journey of growth and diversification.

Strategic acquisitions and ambitious organic growth have fuelled our expansion. We have ventured beyond pipelines, and now have a strong and growing portfolio of gas powered generation, gas storage, contracted power generation and electricity transmission, and renewable energy. Our infrastructure plays a critical role in powering Australia's homes, businesses, and industries. Our commitment to innovation and sustainability positions us as a leader in Australia's energy transition.

  • The Australian Pipeline Trust listed on ASX
Our journey began in June 2000 when AGL decided to float its gas transmission assets into a trust, initially named Australian Pipeline Trust, and list it as a separate entity on the Australian Securities Exchange. This marked the birth of APA (named for the ASX code assigned to the securities), which embarked on a path of expansion and diversification.

  • The early years
In our early years, we focused on consolidating our ownership of key gas transmission pipelines. In 2001, we acquired the remaining interest in the Roma to Brisbane Pipeline, and in 2003, we increased our stake in the Goldfields Gas Transmission Pipeline. These strategic moves solidified our position in the gas transmission sector.
