APA is to receive $5.5 million funding from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) to develop a 20-megawatt solar photovoltaic farm on the site of its Emu Downs Wind Farm in Western Australia. APA has also entered into a  power purchase agreement to sell electricity and generation certificates generated by the solar farm to energy provider, Synergy, to 2030.

The Emu Downs site is located around 200km north of Perth and 30km east of Cervantes. The existing Emu Downs Wind Farm fronts Bibby Road and spreads either side of Yeeramullah Road and is located wholly within the locality of Badgingarra, which is contained within the Shire of Dandaragan. The solar farm is proposed to be located in the north-west corner of the Emu Downs Wind Farm area. The site will be fenced and set back from Bibby Road and the Badgingarra National Park.

The solar farm will utilise the existing transmission connection infrastructure of the wind farm, with only minor upgrades required to the existing substation.

The solar farm will have approximately 75,000 solar panels covering 70 hectares. The panels will be fitted on a tracking system for optimum solar power collection.

Construction of the solar farm commenced in April 2017 and is expected to be completed in January 2018.
